ACCA WELCOMES BUSINESS BANK ANNOUNCEMENTS

March 23,2013

The Bank needs to be in it for the long term, says global professional body

The objectives and operational plan for the British Business Bank, revealed earlier today by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) in a strategy update, has been broadly welcomed today by ACCA (The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

Manos Schizas, Senior Economic Analyst at ACCA, said: ‘We know that many will be disappointed to find that the bank will not be lending directly to businesses. We are not. It is good to see that BIS has instead given the Bank a clear remit to reshape the market by supporting new products and new finance providers.’

ACCA still believes that some details need to be clarified. The global body for accountants said it hopes that the Bank will be allowed to use the £2.9 billion of commitments it has inherited from existing schemes as it sees fit, and will have simple reporting lines to government and parliament so that it won’t be distracted from its mission.
ACCA acknowledges that Autumn 2014, when the Bank will finally be spun off from BIS, may not seem soon enough to many stakeholders. However, the ACCA notes that the Business Bank is not meant to provide a short-term intervention, but rather a central plank to the UK’s long-term industrial policy.

Manos Schizas explained: ‘The Bank needs to become an institution around which entirely new markets are built – it will need to still be there 50 years from now. How much lending or investment it facilitates in year one is completely beside the point, although I appreciate that the government can’t be seen to take this view. We can only hope that Sir Peter Burt and his Advisory Group will.'

ACCA believes that, once pilots are complete later in 2013, the Bank’s work programme needs to be matched with initiatives to engage investors and secure deal flow for the Bank. Because of this, ACCA welcomes the initiative to consolidate advice for growing businesses under the bank’s brand.

Manos Schizas concluded: 'We hope that professional accountants can do much of the Bank’s marketing for it – their links to business are deeper and stronger than those of government. In the long term, however, it’s also important to see how the profession can work with intermediaries to provide a steady stream of high-quality referrals.'

Business Bank Strategy Update - The Government has today published a strategy update on the business bank, which:

  1. quantifies the resources which the bank will use

  2. outlines the range of activities of the bank

  3. sets out key milestones for its operations.

FEMALE ACCOUNTANTS ON THE RISE

March 09,2013

The number of female accountants across the globe has been rising steadily in recent years but more must be done to ensure the profession is more diverse especially in leadership roles, says ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) ahead of International Women’s Day 2013

According to data on the UK accountancy profession the number of qualified female accountants rose from 30 per cent in to 34 per cent between 2006 and 2011 while the percentage of females studying for their accountancy qualifications fluctuated between 48 per cent and 49 per cent. ACCA has a high percentage of both female students and members globally (44 per cent of members and 50 per cent of ACCA students are female).

Commenting on International Women's Day, Helen Brand, chief executive of ACCA, said: 'Accountancy is often perceived as a male dominated industry, but the number of women in the profession has been rising steadily in recent years.'

Brand continued, 'International Women's Day is a day for celebrating progress, but also recognising what still needs to be done. While these figures are certainly promising, as an industry we must work together to ensure that female talent is nurtured and supported. Despite encouraging numbers of women entering the profession, they are still under-represented in high level positions in the industry. The profession must work together collectively to find ways of helping women reach the more senior positions.'

In December 2012, a report, Women in finance; a springboard to corporate board positions?, commissioned by ACCA and the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) from Cranfield School of Management revealed that a financial qualification or a background which demonstrates substantial financial acumen are seen as catalysts for women getting onto the boards of FTSE companies.

ACCA is committed to diversity in the profession and had the first woman member of any professional accountancy body – Ethel Ayres Purdie, who became a member of ACCA in 1909. ACCA says that with its current student profile, women are set to overtake their male counterparts with 50.7 per cent global membership.

Record number of students complete ACCA exams

February 12,2013

A record number of students around the world successfully completed their final exams in the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) examinations in December 2012.

More than 7,200 students passed their final exams - a slight increase on the previous record numbers in June 2012 – which will enable them to take the next step to ACCA membership.  In all, over 198,000 candidates took almost 367,000 papers around the world, with more than 60,000 students sitting computer based exams.

Pass rates were in line with expectations, but ACCA will be looking at what it can do to further assist students and learning providers to enable more students to succeed in papers where success rates are lower.

Alan Hatfield, ACCA director - learning, said: "All students who have passed their exams deserve a great deal of praise, particularly the 7,200 who have completed their final exams and are able to demonstrate that they have a comprehensive range of skills and a full understanding of the finance chain –  in short, that they are complete finance professionals – something which employers have stressed they need in a difficult economic environment. It is good to note that many of the students who have passed their final papers have also completed their practical experience requirements whilst studying for the exams and we look forward to welcoming them to ACCA membership soon. I hope all students are able to successfully complete their practical experience requirements and to go on to become members of ACCA."

"While most results are in line with historical averages, we will be looking closely at pass rates to look at what action we need to take, in partnership with learning providers, to see what improvements can be made. For example, it has been encouraging to see that results for Paper F7, Financial Reporting have continued to improve, following an investment in extra help for students and tutors," said Alan Hatfield.
